Performance Benchmark on Database Column and Row Expansion

What performs better – Expanding DB column or expanding db row? My benchmark test shows expanding DB column performs better, on the following machine configuration: Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4; 2.66 GHz; Memory: 960 RAM.
